The race for Texas’ 8th Congressional District just got its first serious candidate with the announcement that Morgan Luttrell, retired Navy SEAL and brother of Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell, is running to replace retiring Congressman Kevin Brady.
Luttrell announced his campaign live on the show of Houston radio host Michael Berry.
“I’m running for Congress for the very same reason that I served in the military, for our country and to support and defend the constitution of the United State. Period,” Luttrell told Berry.
Luttrell has deep roots in CD-08. He attended Willis High School in northern Montgomery County, and graduated from Sam Houston State University. He currently resides in Magnolia with his wife Leslie and their two children.
Although his brother Marcus is better known from the book Lone Survivor and the eponymous 2013 film, Morgan has an honorable military career as well, having served 14 years.
While this is Luttrell’s first foray into electoral politics, he has a close relationship with former Texas governor Rick Perry. Luttrell served as a special advisor to Perry when the latter was Secretary of Energy in the Trump administration. Luttrell has hired Brady’s campaign manager, Craig Lewellen, to run his campaign.
Luttrell’s military service, name ID, and connections propel him to the top tier of CD-08 candidates right out of the gate. He is the first serious contender to formally announce.
Brady’s former campaign manager and founder of the Texas Youth Summit, Christian Collins, has said he is “strongly considering” a run to replace his old boss. State Representative Steve Toth (R-Conroe) has also been hinting at a potential run.
Redistricting has left a lot in the air. It’s possible CD-08 will be carved up and have its boundaries moved. The Republican primary will also likely be delayed in 2022.
“Our freedoms are under the constant threat of the socialist agenda,” said Luttrell. “The radical left is waging a culture war on Texans’ very way of life. We can’t allow the conservative values we’re teaching our children to be threatened by Washington, DC. As your Congressman, I will bring bold leadership and always put America first.”
