Only days after declaring his candidacy for U.S. Congress, conservative activist Christian Collins has received a major boost in his bid to replace retiring Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) representing Texas’ 8th Congressional District in the Houston suburbs. In a series of Tweets, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced that he is formally endorsing Collins for the seat.
“The Biden administration is a disaster, we have a crisis at our border, inflation is rising, and they are trying to shut down our economy and enforce lawless mandates,” said Cruz. “It is critical that we send strong conservatives to Washington to help lead the fight to save our country.”
Cruz continued, “That’s why I’m proud to endorse Christian Collins in TX-8. I know Christian well and have worked alongside him. I know that he is a strong conservative who shares our values. No one will work harder on the campaign trail to earn your vote, and I look forward to joining him there.”
Collins worked for Cruz’s 2016 presidential campaign, before subsequently becoming Brady’s campaign manager and political advisor. Collins ultimately went on to found the Texas Youth Summit, which seeks to educate young people on conservative principles and mobilize them to become more involved in politics.
“It is an honor to receive Senator Cruz’s endorsement,” said Collins, referring to the senator as a mentor, “both personally and politically.”
Collins, who says he will be “a peoples’ congressman”, pledged to be a conservative fighter in the mold of Cruz. “I will join Senator Cruz in Washington and stand up for our conservative values, for Texas, and America,” he said.
Widely considered to be a strong contender for the seat of his former boss, Cruz’ endorsement cements Collins’ position in the top tier of CD-08 candidates. The endorsement burnishes Collins’ tea party credentials as he campaigns as an outsider who will not simply do the bidding of lobbyists or House GOP leadership.
Within the district, Collins is pursuing a strategy of maintaining broad appeal locally across the spectrum of the Republican Party. He is appealing to the tea party base on issues, however, he also has considerable support among Brady supporters in the district due to personal relationships he has cultivated for many years. Cruz’s endorsement of Collins will complicate things considerably for other candidates trying to run in the tea party lane.
The Cruz endorsement also underscores the extant to which Collins has established relationships and trust with GOP insurgents in Washington D.C. He was photographed meeting with leaders of the House Freedom Caucus a few months ago. Sources have informed the Texas Citizen Journal that several more big name endorsements for Collins within the conservative movement will be coming soon.
