The results are in for the May 1 city elections, and the voters of Lubbock have chosen to become a sanctuary city- but not the kind of sanctuary city you might think.
With 62% for and 38% against, the voters of Lubbock chose to become a sanctuary city for the unborn. The ordinance prohibits abortions within the city limits, thus making Lubbock a “sanctuary city” for it’s tiniest residents.
The proposition was the result of a huge effort on the part of pro-life activists in the west Texas city. After the ordinance was rejected by the city council, activists were able to collect enough signatures to put it on the ballot for a vote of the people.
Among the groups supporting the sanctuary city proposition is Texas Right to Life, which has helped enact similar ordinances in many small Texas cities.

Texas Right to Life Director of Media and Communications Kimberlyn Schwartz, a west Texas native and graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock responded to today’s vote, “We celebrate this pro-life victory and applaud the dedicated and inspiring work of activists, local leaders, and Lubbock citizens who brought the ordinance forward, pushed for a vote, and shepherded the pro-life policy across the finish line. Senator Charles Perry (R-Lubbock), Raiders Defending Life, Mark Lee Dickson, and so many others were instrumental in this effort.
Lubbock is the largest city to pass such an ordinance so far. It is also the only one that has a Planned Parenthood clinic.
