Governor Greg Abbott’s 2022 re-election campaign for governor just received a significant boost (at least in the primary) in the form of an endorsement from former president Donald Trump.
“Greg Abbott is a fighter and a Great Governor for the incredible people of Texas,” said Trump. “No Governor has done more to secure the Border and keep our communities safe than Governor Abbott. Greg is a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and has made Texas a Second Amendment Sanctuary State. Texas has become a job-creating machine, and our partnership helped restore America’s economic power and success. Greg is also very tough on crime, fully supports the brave men and women of Law Enforcement, and is all in on Election Integrity. Governor Greg Abbott will continue to be a great leader for the Lone Star State, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for re-election. He will never let you down!”
Abbott’s popularity has taken a dive over the last year as he has come under fire from both the right and the left for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. He is currently facing challenges in the Republican primary from former Dallas area state senator Don Huffines and entertainer Chad Prather. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has also hinted at challenging Abbott in the primary, and Republican Party of Texas Chairman Allen West is also rumored to be considering a run.
While Trump’s popularity undoubtedly remains high among the Republican base, and his endorsement will greatly benefit Abbott in the primary, it could also be a two-edge sword. The Trump endorsement could hurt Abbott in the general electing with swing voters and independents.
No major Democrat candidates have announced yet, although they will undoubtedly mount an effort to take the governor’s mansion. Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke could be a potential contender. Actor Matthew McConaughey has openly discussed running for governor, although he has not indicated which party he would run with.
Abbott has wasted no time touting the former president’s endorsement:
“President Trump is a great friend of Texas,” said Abbott. “I thank him for his endorsement. I’m proud of the work we’ve done together to secure our border, bring more jobs to Texas, & protect the freedoms that make America & Texas great — & we are just getting started.”
